An Eye Witness Account From
Timeline of Hurricane Irene on Turks and Caicos:
As you know, my family and I were in Turks and Caicos during our vacation / business trip. We did get through our 7
nights normally, but when we watched the Weather Channel on Sunday, August 21st, we noticed that there was a
possibility that Tropical Storm Irene would turn into a hurricane and head in our direction. On Monday at around
11:00, we learned that flights were canceled on Tuesday due to a return home. We also learned that Tropical Storm
Irene has now become Hurricane Irene and is heading straight for us. Hooray !!
Meeting at the resort:

At 2:00 pm on Monday, a spa meeting with the general manager of the resort took place at an Italian restaurant.
He told everyone what they were going to do at the resort so that all guests were as safe as possible and everyone was
as comfortable as possible. He told us that the resort has two huge $ 5 million generators in case the power goes out
and they have enough food and water for 30 days. He told us that the storm would start around 2:00 pm on Tuesday
and that we would like to stay in our rooms and that there will be restaurants open for us to eat and plenty of indoor
activities that will be available for both children. and for adults while we wait. out of the storm.
Waiting for Hurricane Irene:

Hurricane Irene was only moving at about 9 miles per hour and turned into a Category 2 hurricane when it left
Puerto Rico for the Turks and Caicos Islands. We had pretty good weather on Monday, but as the day went on we
noticed stronger winds, the waves in the ocean became more erratic, and there were showers again and again that we
hadn’t experienced in the previous 7 days. . I decided to start giving video updates from the resort to keep people
informed about the weather conditions in Turks and Caicos.
Irene finally arrived:
Monday was a very calm and even quite pleasant evening. On Tuesday morning, the sky was a curtain of thick gray
clouds and the wind began to pick up. The resort staff worked hard to remove all of the pool furniture and tried to tie
and secure everything in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. At about 3 o’clock in the afternoon (when our
flight was supposed to take off) the wind really got stronger, and there was a downpour with showers. I tried to find
the high point at the resort to quickly update the information.
Stay in your rooms

At this point, most people started staying in their rooms and only went out for food. My daughters actually went to
the coffee shop to pour themselves their daily gourmet cappuccino. My daughter Josie wrote in the Face book that
she “went through a hurricane to have coffee.” Around 5:00 pm, before the sun began to set, I decided to make
another post. Now the wind was really blowing, and the rain was turning into a wall of streaming water.
Lunch time: Irene “takes him up a notch”

We quickly ran out of our room and ran down the hallways until we reached an English pub called Cricketer’s.
Here I have to say that the resort staff did a fantastic job making us all feel safe and they kept the restaurants open
for us even though the street was really scary. The worst hurricane happened while we were sleeping. The wind and
rain did intensify from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. When we woke up, I quickly shot a video of the sliding door in our bedroom.
The skeleton staff works around the clock
On this day, I really have to say that I was amazed by the management and staff of the resorts, as well as how they
took care of us. Only 95 employees out of 1200 were able to go to work that day. Many were stuck at home due to

continued rain and flooding, but their own were also flooded. One of the hardest working women in the entire
resort was a single mother with two young children. She hopes to become a nurse, works long hours, and saves
money to attend nursing classes in the United States. She had to come to work at 10 am, and as she drove to work,
she could barely see it raining, but she was there by 9:45 am to do her duties. She really impressed me.
Dealing with irritable people
Be that as it may, there are 3 large restaurants left in the resort and there is a great buffet for us. Many complained,
but I could not believe that these people could have such a bad attitude towards the situation in which we found

ourselves. act when visiting other countries. I know the resort staff definitely didn’t want the hurricane to hit them
and make life 10x harder for them. At that time, on Wednesday, we were the only place on the island with electricity,
food and water. We were in the safest place during the hurricane.
Hurricane Irene is finally over
It wasn’t until around 3:00 pm on Wednesday that Hurricane Irene finally ended and I went with
